Cinterion M2M Market Leadership – An Overview
Since 1995, Cinterion has been a pioneer in the M2M marketplace, innovating new products and helping businesses around the world leverage the power of wireless communications to increase productivity and efficiency while improving business process. Since its inception, Cinterion has been the innovation leader introducing the latest technologies and launching more first to market products than any other manufacturer in the industry. Since its launch, Cinterion sales have grown from 3 million Euros to over 200 million Euros; its product offerings have grown from 3 modules to more than 40 market leading products and its business has grown from a start-up to the global market share leader.
Cinterion's Milestones of Success Throughout the Years
With the legendary Siemens M1 module, Cinterion entered the market in 1995 as the first company to provide a GSM data module for M2M solutions. |
Cinterion extended its module offerings to the automotive market launching specialized products that enabled voice and SMS transmission in addition to standard telematics features such as remote monitoring, maintenance and repair. These specialized modules were designed specifically for the automotive market with particularly high standards for temperature and vibration loads and with special features such as antenna diagnosis and more. |
Cinterion continued to expand its innovative product portfolio and extend its global footprint launching operations in both China and Brazil. |
Cinterion developed and launched the renowned MC35, the world's first packet-based GPRS module which revolutionized the M2M marketplace. GPRS modules support data transmission in addition to voice communication and SMS all in one compact, easy and integrated format. GPRS enables packet data transmission, which has since become the standard for the majority of mobile phones and M2M applications. GPRS also enables “always-on" functionality allowing a permanent service connection for devices and paving the way for new applications and possibilities for mobile remote management. |
Cinterion introduced Java™ enabled modules to the M2M market making it possible to include programming, memory and processing functions directly on the module itself without the integration of external processors or memory cards. In the M2M environment, the use of Java™ Open Platform modules saves development time and money and enables an easier integration of standard applications with high safety and security standards. Today, Cinterion remains the leading provider of Java™ enabled modules worldwide. |
Cinterion launched the first to market GSM / GPRS module with integrated GPS. This innovation combined exact positioning and localization data with mobile data communications for an intelligent, compact and cost effective solution. The combination of GSM and GPS enabled a variety of new tracking and tracing applications and expanded M2M penetration in a variety of new vertical markets. In the same year, Cinterion continued its global expansion launching regional headquarters in the USA and South Africa. |
Cinterion launched the world's first EDGE (Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution) M2M module. The extension of GPRS to EDGE standards allowed for faster data transfer up to 236kbits and became the basis for a variety of new applications that required high speed functioning. Today, mobile operators worldwide use EDGE in their networks to provide fast mobile internet and efficient mobile data transmission. Also in 2004 Cinterion, was selected as the module supplier for Germany’s toll collect system. Cinterion modules enable transmission of toll data from vehicles to command central to evaluate distance traveled, number of cars on the roadways and more. Recently, Cinterion extended its leadership in German telematics by enabling communications for the eCall pilot program throughout the European Union. eCall is an innovative international project designed to improve traffic and safety conditions on EU roadways. eCall requires that by 2013, all EU vehicles will be equipped with mobile communication devices that send automatic alerts and vehicle GPS data to the nearest emergency response center as airbags are triggered or crashes occur. Again, Cinterion lead the industry by launching the first eCall enabled module for the automotive industry. |
By 2005 mobile networks were evolving to HSDPA (High-Speed Downlink Packet Access) enabling wireless data transfer that rivaled broadband speeds. |
Cinterion was once again, the first to launch HSDPA modules to market. The HC25 supports complex applications with high-speed data rates along with voice and media applications. |
Cinterion launched advanced HSDPA modules with global roaming capabilities. The HC28 provides seamless wireless broadband transmission speeds in places such as Japan and other countries where network configurations differ from other parts of the world. The HC28 was approved and certified by global mobile carriers and further demonstrates Cinterion’s far-reaching, global development expertise. |
Cinterion launched its Evolution Platform, a new generation of scalable modules providing backward and forward compatibility for easy integration in existing applications. This platform provides seamless scalability from basic voice applications to sophisticated EDGE-based data applications. All Evolution Platform products provide integration ease due to a single form factor and identical antenna and plug-in connections allowing simple hardware integration and easy to mange upgrades as technology needs evolve. By providing customers with technology that can grow with business needs, Cinterion safeguards their customers’ technology investment - from GSM-based applications to more complex EDGE applications and beyond. |
Cinterion extended its Evolution Platform again by offering reliable land grid array (LGA) surface mount technology with flexible soldering for GSM, GPRS and EDGE modules – all with optimized size and performance. LGA technology assures efficiency and process consistency for fully automated manufacturing and it provides cost savings and a faster time to market for integrators. Cinterion also signed partnership agreements with major worldwide mobile operators to jointly improve quality and interoperability across varied cellular standards and jointly develop new technologies such as the "Component SIM" to ensure optimal communication solutions. Moving forward, Cinterion continues its commitment to research and development with plans to further develop the Evolution Platform adding modules with UMTS and HSPA functionality in addition to optimized features and forward and backward compatibility. |
